Monica’s Journey: How Furniture Helped Turn a House into a Home

Monica, a 44-year-old mother from Redford, knows firsthand how a simple piece of furniture can mean the world to someone rebuilding their life. Six months ago, her world was shattered when, alone in her hotel room, she was assaulted by two intruders. This horrifying incident came after months of hardship—Monica had already been struggling with homelessness due to injuries from a car accident that left her unable to work.

With courage and resilience, Monica fought to get back on her feet. Avalon Healing Center and Wayne Metro Community Action Agency supported her in her journey to healing and stability, helping her find a new place to call home. In September, Monica moved into a four-bedroom house with her fiancé and two sons, but it was far from complete. Thanks to the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit, her home was filled with essentials—a sofa, a coffee table, a dining table, chairs, and mattresses. Each piece was a step toward reclaiming her life. “I appreciate all of the blessings and can’t thank the Furniture Bank enough for making my house a home,” said Monica.
